Commitment is a difficult thing for most people to commit to and follow through on. Let me drop a few synonyms of the word commitment on you; promise (n): pledge, vow, obligation, dedication, assurance and binder. Here lately, I find myself struggling to follow through on any of my normal health and fitness commitments/routines. I’ve had 2 surgeries since October 2010, and up until 2 weeks ago I’ve been unable to engage in any aggressive fitness regimens. I’m not using this as an excuse, however, commitment to what I know to be my norm seems like something I’m chasing and it’s just out of my reach. So what’s a person to do? Well, a few days ago while in Sunday morning worship, the minister happened to reference Proverbs 16:3 (KJV), “Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.” The scripture struck a chord with me and has been convicting me since, so I started mediating and reading the verse in other bible versions. I wanted this conviction to spur me on to move.
The New Living Translation reads, “Commit your actions to the Lord, and your plans will succeed.” Now I was getting down to the meat of the matter. The time off from the surgeries had caused me to lose focus of why I do what I do. My reasons for getting fit and for being healthy aren’t about me, they’re about God. I had lost my “Getting Fit for the Kingdom” mentality. It’s so vitally important to stay focused on God in everything. My elusive grasping had me feeling like I was fighting against the wind. I was exhausted from trying to commit and didn’t know it. That’s how slick the devil is.
The Amplified Version reads, “Roll your works upon the Lord [commit and trust them wholly to Him; He will cause your thoughts to become agreeable to His will, and] so shall your plans be established and succeed.” To commit is to entrust, give or hand over my works completely, entirely, and totally to God. In doing so, He will align my thoughts with His desire. Only then can I get back on course. Take the focus off of me and put it back on Him. Matthew 6:33 (KJV), “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” God is the reason why I desire to be healthy and fit because He needs workers in the vineyard. Luke tells us, “Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest (10:2).” It’s time to renew my health and fitness pledge, vow, obligation, dedication to the Lord and get to work! How about you?
