It seems like it was just yesterday that all of the hoopla surrounding “America’s Team” was as widespread as the news of our first African American President. Now, just like the events of the 2008 Election, any hope of salvaging a promising season has become a distant memory.
Dallas Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones is not one to be associated with the term “tight wad,” as he shelved out over 1 billion dollars in mostly his own money to provide a state-of-the art playing field for his most prized possession; the players. One would think that with new digs brings a “can do” mentality and fresh approach to a season full of uncertainty with the NFL’s labor issues looming at the conclusion of the 2010 season. However, the exact opposite has beseeched the team. As at press time, the Cowboys are an unfathomable 1-6, and all but eliminated from any hopes of playing beyond December.
Their last lost was a walloping defeat by the Jacksonville Jaguars in their own backyard (35-17). The defense made Jaguars’ quarterback, David Garrard, look as if he was the second coming of Randall Cunningham and an instant Hall of Famer. Now, let’s not get too ahead of ourselves here; the ‘Boys are having an understated “off” year and it is just beyond imagination why they continue to stick with a statue as a head coach, when he has clearly lost any respect from his players and peers.
What was once seen as a season of firsts; 1st time playing at new stadium; 1st time no.1 draft pick Dez Bryant would play in a Cowboy uniform; 1st time that a team hosting the Super Bowl would appear in the game. Well, all goals have been accomplished so far except the one that really counts; there won’t be any Super Bowl tickets printed with the Cowboys logo on the face.
What does this all means? I can’t be sure. However, I am relatively certain that if Jerry Jones doesn’t have plenty of non-football related events lined up, he may have to write-off his “billion-dollar baby” as a lost investment based on the current performance of his team.
“How about them Cowboys,” you say? I respond, “What about them?”
